University Of Ibadan To Produce Ebola Vaccines

Professor Isaac Adewole, the Vice chancellor, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, has hinted that the institution has set up a Committee on Ebola Prevention and Preparedness, to try and produce Ebola vaccine. Nigerian Tribune reports that the Vice chancellor, while speaking at a town hall meeting in Ibadan, further revealed that the institution’s virology laboratory would be expanded and make sure it produce a vaccine that could be used to prevent Ebola. Professor Adewole said the university had concluded plans to spearhead Ebola vaccine production, and advised residents to dispel their fears as they would be adequately equipped with necessary information about the virus. He urged the federal government to investigate the allegation that the late Patrick Sawyer was paid to import the virus to Nigeria, and cautioned people against handshake. Professor Maurice Iwu, said a plant commonly eaten in West Africa, popularly known as kola nut can cure the deadly Ebola virus as shown in its tracks during a laboratory tests. Tuition to be introduced in federal universities

Abuja – The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities on Friday called for the introduction of tuition in Federal universities to support funding of the universities. This is contained in a communiqué signed by Prof. Kimse Okoko, Chairman of the committee, in Abuja. The communiqué decried the resistance to introduce tuition in some universities by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and Students’ Union Government. According to the communiqué, the resistance is based on the argument that the introduction of tuition may take university education beyond the reach of the poor. It stated that avenues for finance for indigent students includes the revival of the student loans schemes, bursaries and scholarship, education bank, among other initiatives, should be put in place. The communiqué also stated that students who could afford to pay should be allowed to do so. 6 Varsities Get N2 Billion NLNG Support

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) has signed a N2 billion Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with six Nigerian universities, one representing each of the six geo-political zones in the country, to develop their engineering education capacity. The beneficiaries are the University of Ilorin, representing the North-Central; the University of Ibadan, representing the South-West; the University of Port Harcourt, representing the South-South; the University of Maiduguri, representing the North-East; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, representing the North-West and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, representing the South-East. LETS JAMB RESULT BE VALID FOR 2 YEARS - CONFAB

The National Conference (Confab) Committee on Social Sector chaired by former Minister of Women Affairs, Josephine Anenih, with the immediate past Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i as her deputy has recommended that the results obtained by candidates who sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) should be valid for two years so as to enable candidates get another chance at admission. The committee lamented the circumstance where over 1.5 million candidates jostle for just 500, 000 available admission space yearly, leaving the bulk of one million who are unable to secure admission because of low carrying capacity of the institutions in the country. This issue has been on for years thereby increasing the number of candidates writing the JAMB UTME every year by over 100 percent. The committee recommendation will be debated at the floor of the confab this week and a decision is expected to be made.

Latest information reaching us reveals that the the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has extended the closing date for the change of Institution and Course. JAMB Candidates who took part in the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) that JAMB official closing date for change of Course/Institution has been extended. If we recalled, Jamb announced Friday, 6th June, 2014 as the expiring date for the change of Institution and/or course for the 2014 session, but the latest report reaching us from JAMB, the deadline is now 13th June, 2014. All Jamb candidates who would like to apply for change of Institution and Course should do so as soon as possible as the date may not be extended further as Tertiary Institutions will soon release the date of their post-utme exercise.

Dora Akuyili, former Minister of Information is dead

Former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili is dead. She died this morning in India where she was receiving treatment for Cancer related ailment. The erstwhile National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) boss was flown to India on Sunday, May 11, 2014 for further treatment upon the advice of doctors treating her in Abuja where she was on a national assignment. Her death was confirmed to our correspondent by her media adviser, Mr. Isaac Umunna, this morning. Akuyili who broke down at the on-going National Conference was first attended to by doctors in Abuja but had to travel to India on their advice for further medical attention.
