5 Tips For University Freshers
So you just gained admission into your university of choice. Congratulation!! Just to let you know, life at the university campus is so different from what you're used to. Here its a new lifestyle you'll be experiencing.
You'll do new courses and meet new course mates (people with different ideologies) and most of the decisions you take at the university will determine how your future will eventually turn out so it is better you're prepared and properly guided as a fresher on campus.
The tips below will give you a head start during your early days on campus.
1.Be prepared:
There's nothing more pitiable than a man who isn't prepared for the challenges ahead. A quote I love so well says: "If you fail to plan, you've planned to fail".
You should be mentally prepared for the new life ahead. Set your goals, envision the kind of lifestyle you'd love to live on Campus, the type of friends you'd love to keep, the grade you'd love to graduate with and so much more. Know that you're going to have different experiences which would influence you. You should choose how each and every experience will help in achieving your goals. Be open to positive changes but resist negative influences which you'll be getting a lot.
2.Start building the grade immediately
It is always better and easier to build good grades from the beginning than later in the course of study. A study we did revealed that those who had good grades from the beginning found it easier to maintain those grades than those with pretty bad grades.
In fact it is more common for your CGPA to fall than rise. Say if you have a good grade (say a first class)from start, you'll still have a second class upper (which is a very good grade) even if your GP falls. However if you had a second class lower in your early days, how easy do you think it will be to build your grade into a good standing?
Learn how to calculate your CGPA and always try to build on it.
3.Drop the pidgin or vernacular
I'm not saying you should abandon your roots just because you're now in the university but where's the pride in being an undergraduate if you cannot speak excellent English? You are on campus and not a motor park so please speak correct and well polished English.
4.Avoid The Bad Guys
Unfortunately, almost every university campus has the unwelcome presence of the bad guys. There are also female gangs that can choose To molest a guy to death or put up any other nefarious acts. Avoid those guys if you can identify them. If they 'toast' you should bluntly and firmly but diplomatically resist or you may lose your neck right there.
When they come don't run, stand your ground and they will respect you. Never be insulting to them or prove to know more than them. Just insist that you made a choice not to 'belong' and that you will never 'belong' and they will let you be.
5.Don't immediately set out to have a partner in school
Relax man, you're just in your first year. Resist the pressure to pick a girl. Give yourself time. Going after a partner now may cause unnecessary distractions for you. Take your time to study the new environment and much later you should know who is a good match for you.
I know there are other aspects of the freshman life on Campus I did not talk about in this article. As a freshman, what advice do you have for your fellow freshers on campus? Past the freshman period? What advice would you give to the freshers?
