Seven persons have been feared dead as a result of the heavy downpour in Ibadan, Oyo State. The rain which started at about 9pm on Sunday lasted till Monday left the residents counting their losses. According to the residents of the affected communities in Oluyole Local Government Area of the State said the victims were swept away by the flood while trying to cross a bridge, which, unknown to them, had already collapsed under the water. The impact of the flood was noticeable in areas like Arapaja, Akala new extension, and Lao hospital area where some people reportedly fell into the flood waters when they tried to cross the flood-covered collapsed bridge. Over 28,000 candidates on Wednesday began sitting for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for only 3,500 admission spaces into the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Education, Farouk Lawal, yesterday, appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to return to the negotiating table with the Federal Government to bring an end to the lingering strike. Lawal, who spoke during a chat with newsmen, also charged the Federal Government not to always cave in to pressure to sign an agreement if it knew the terms were stringent. He recalled that similar incident had occurred in the past when government bowed to pressure and later backslid, stressing that dialogue remained the best way out of the present ASUU/FG impasse. Joint Health Workers' Union of Nigeria (JOHESU) has called off the strike it embarked upon on Wednesday, Aug. 21 to push for improved welfareof the workers. In the negotiations between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government forfeited again yesterday as the lecturers have pulled out of the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities. Workers of the Osun State University have commenced an indefinite strike over alleged non-payment of their allowances and other entitlements. Before the strike, the workers ordered a three-day fasting and prayer session to seek the face of God in their agitation. Prof Aloysius Okolie, the immediate past chairman of the union at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said in Nsukka, Enugu State on Friday that the government should not allow a total collapse of tertiary education in the country. Okolie said that no country had attained enviable height economically and technologically without adequate funds for the education sector. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Friday arrested a 27 years old Philosophy student at the Ebonyi State University with 5.960 kilogrammes of drug at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Lagos. The suspect, Mr. Chukwu Ramseyn Onyekaozuru was apprehended during the outward screening of Alitalia passengers when he attempted to smuggle about 5.300kg of cannabis and 660 gramnmes of heroin to Rome, Italy. Speaking on the arrest, NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar pointed out that the student was caught with parcels of cannabis that were covered with dried bitter leaf vegetables inside a bag while the heroin was ingested by the suspect. Mr. Umar further said that the arrest was one of the few cases of poly-drug trafficking made by the command. "Most traffickers smuggle only one drug at a time. Union wants clergy, monarchs, others to prevail on FG THE ongoing industrial action embarked on bythe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) might not be over anytime soon as theFederal Government's re-negotiating committee has failed to reach a compromise with the union. Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State Yesterday expressed the optimism that the ongoing industrial action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU might end in the next one week. Suswam, who is the chairman of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy Assessment Implementation Committee of the universities, spoke with journalists shortly after a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said, "I want to say that we are having negotiation with ASUU. In the next one or two weeks, we should be able to arrive at something that will necessitate them calling off the strike, once we are able to agree with them on all issues that they have raised. "So far, there are only two outstanding issues, the NEEDS assessment and the earned allowances. The NEEDS assessment which I'm handling, we have virtually concluded. The hope for the re- opening of universities in the shortest possible time was dashed Thursday after the Federal Government constituted committee chaired by the Benue State Governor, Hon. Gabriel Suswan in a meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, failed to agree on the contentious issues.
